"Helping People Use the Law..to Resolve Critical Life Conflicts"
My Practice of Law:
The objective or purpose for which I serve my clients is summarized in the mission statement set forth above, “Helping People Use the Law.....to Resolve Critical Life Conflicts.” In order to do this, I am privileged to serve:
As a lawyer, as a member of the legal profession, I am
a representative of clients,
an officer of the legal system, and
a public citizen having special responsibility for the quality of justice.
As a representative of clients, I perform the following functions.
As an advisor, I provide my clients with an informed understanding of their legal rights and obligations and explain their practical implications.
As an advocate, I zealously assert my client's position under the rules of the adversary system.
As a negotiator, I seek a result advantageous to the my clients but consistent with requirements of honest dealing with others.
As an evaluator, I act by examining my client's legal affairs and reporting about them to the client or to others.
As an officer of the legal system, I
Must use the law's procedures only for legitimate purposes and not to harass or intimidate others;
Must demonstrate respect for the legal system and for those who serve it, including judges, other lawyers and public officials; and
While it is my duty, when necessary, to challenge the rectitude of official action, it is also my duty to uphold legal process.
As a public citizen, I
Must seek improvement of the law, access to the legal system, the administration of justice and the quality of service rendered by the legal profession.
As a member of a learned profession, I
Must cultivate knowledge of the law beyond its use for clients, employ that knowledge in reform of the law and work to strengthen legal education;
Must further the public's understanding of and confidence in the rule of law and the justice system because legal institutions in a constitutional democracy depend on popular participation and support to maintain their authority;
Must be mindful of deficiencies in the administration of justice and of the fact that the poor, and sometimes persons who are not poor, cannot afford adequate legal assistance; and
Must devote professional time and resources and use civic influence to ensure equal access to our system of justice for all those who because of economic or social barriers cannot afford or secure adequate legal counsel.
As a lawyer, I owe a solemn duty:
to uphold the integrity and honor of the profession;
to encourage respect for the law and for the courts;
to act as a member of a learned profession;
to conduct affairs so as to reflect credit on the legal profession; and
to inspire the confidence, respect and trust of clients and the public.
Appointments:
My legal career began in August of 1981, following my graduation from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock School of Law. At that time I became a member of the Arkansas Bar and the Eastern and Western District of Arkansas. In addition to these appointments, I am a member of the 9th Circuit U. S. Court of Appeals, the U. S. Court of Federal Claims, and the Arkansas Bar Association.
